Ellen’s art interest began many years ago when she started working with clay. She did functional thrown, high fire and low fire, as well as handbuilt work. Aprroximately 10 years ago she began to explore other artistic possibilities. Color pencil attracted her.
She finds that color pencil is a wonderful medium for blending soft colors and forms with hard edge and sharp dark colors. The work is done with Faber-Castell polychromes, Prisma pencils and ink. The paper is often heavy water color, Strathmore and Arches. The tooth in these heavy papers is what allows the paper to both capture each individual color and to easily blend.
As she developed skill in this medium Ellen moved away from realistic work, especially flowers, to more abstract forms. In many works Ellen tries to bring contrasting colors, dark ink touching light yellow, soft pink with a touch of deep red She also uses contrasting shapes, the round circle with the single straight line. A sharp dark line penetrating the soft cloud.
This play of contrasts in Ellen’s work continues to entertain her and hopefully brings pleasure to the viewer.
This website was created to encourage you to check out a sampling of Ellen’s body of work including: drawings, cutouts, and ceramics. However, if you are interested in purchasing a print of the drawings please indicate this on the contact page.
